Autumn swept through most of the territories in the area. Mother Nature or Father Time (whoever wanted to take the credit for it) had begun to make their necessary preparations for the season too. The radiant heat of the summer time was dwindling down to cooler temperatures. Instead of blue skies and puffy clouds, the sky was grayish and mist cloaked the air. The naturally instilled instincts of animals told them to prepare for what was coming. This was only the mere introduction of what was to come in the future. They either got ready for it or got left far behind. Some creatures, such as flocks of birds, chose to migrate to a different location. Others, like bears, ate their fill so they could hunker down and hibernate. The choices were endless as to survival techniques; one just simply had to choose one and stick with it diligently. Sometimes it was easier said than done, but that was just how the world worked these days.
Appari was one of the creatures who chose to stick out the autumn and winter seasons where he was. He had traveled far and wide to get where he was at that very moment, and it was too late to change his mind. His brother, sister, and parents were miles and miles away by then. In order to reach them in an adequate amount of time, he would have to travel day and night relentlessly. That was something he could not afford. And, in all reality, he did not want to travel to his homeland yet. Indeed he dreamed of them occasionally and wondered how they were fairing, but he was his own wolf now. Going back after he only recently left could be interpreted as a sign of weakness. Appari had climbed an imaginary steep mountain to earn the respect of his peers. He did not want to deal with the potential gossip and false accusations against him. One day he would travel to meet his family again as promised. One day, the familiar touch of his birth territory would brush against his paw pads, and invite him in a welcoming embrace. But that would be one day, not this one.
The pallid white male ventured from home to create a long standing legacy that extended beyond what he was used to. Other wolves in his pack desired only to have security and a respectable position in the pack. But Appari longed for more, even as a young pup. And that inner longing only grew with his advancing age and ever changing appearance. The drive to be something better was like a beacon of light in the overarching atmosphere; and the male was more than willing to chase after it. His heart was in his mission, and come heck or high water, he would harness it. That was the personal vow that he made to himself, even if it took his entire lifetime. If other things happened along the way, Appari had no choice but to adapt to them as well. But, so what? So far there was nothing he had not been able to manage.
It was while Appari was traveling to who knows where that he came upon treed lands. His reddened gaze perused over the landscape, curious as to what it had in store. There seemed to be nothing preventing his entrance, and so Appari stepped into the forest-like area. The second his paws crossed what seemed like the boundary line, his nose went to the ground. The pallid male snuffled around, trying to obtain scents and ascertain information. Nothing peculiar or specific seemed to register with him. The only scents he gathered were those of various trees and an abundance of flowers. One specific variation of foliage made Appari sneeze heavily, with which he shook his head to clear it. So, no one lived here predominantly? The wolf could not help to wonder why. Surely a land as picturesque as this one would have life. Was there something deceptive he was missing? There was always that possibility, but it was also possible for there not to be as well.
With a shrug, Appari moved deeper and deeper into the lands. His tail swished in delight, seeing the freedom and pleasant aura that the place gave off. He was correct in his assumption that nothing was wrong here, and much to his pleasure, this land was for the taking. If there were any scents before, they were long gone. The side of the white wolf’s mouth twitched into a hint of a smile before it disappeared seconds later. His full smile was commonly hidden through his often stoic expressions. The laughter he had once possessed as a kid only reared its happy head on special occasions. Very special occasions at that. After realizing his good luck, Appari went about making these lands his own. This was the first step to acquiring his dream.
The first order of business to be taken care of was laying down scent markers everywhere. These were the first line of defense against outsiders. They were a nonverbal warning to others whether Appari was in the vicinity or not. Some chose to respect these markers while others just blatantly ignored them outright. Either way, the male felt they were important to establish early on. Appari rubbed his body against various trees, and pawed at others. Small nicks were left in the bark, but not enough to harm the trunk. He laid other various markers along the border of the territory, to varying degrees. Appari did not howl as he heard others do, for that was only temporary. If someone was beyond the reaches of his voice, he would go unnoticed. Looking back on his handy work, Appari was pleased. He had claimed his first land! He was now the Alpha of his first territory. And, thankfully, it had come without a power struggle of any sort. Maybe that was a sign he was doing the right thing. Sometimes struggle meant a bigger, better picture was coming, but Appari did not feel that way here. This place just felt like it suited him.
A single whisper of wind enveloped Appari momentarily, and he could have sworn the name Adamo was what it said to him. He nodded silently, accepting what he heard as kosher. Adamo this place would officially be. Alpha Appari of Adamo – it certainly sounded nice to hear. The wolf found a rather large boulder to rest upon, and clambered on top of it. This would be his rock for the time being, unless stated otherwise; he felt comfortable just relaxing there.
This was la vida – this was the life.
